M. Rahman Kaleem, a graduate student in the Master of Science in Management of Smart and Sustainable Energy Systems program at the International Academy for German Engineering and Science (IAGES), has achieved a major academic milestone by being selected as a finalist for the prestigious OIES Aramco Research Fellowship at the Oxford Institute of Energy Studies.
The Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES), globally recognized for its independent research on the economics and politics of international energy, hosts this competitive fellowship in partnership with Aramco to support pioneering research addressing the future of global energy markets and the sustainable transition.
„As part of my Master’s studies in the MOSSES programme at RUB, I developed a research project investigating whether established oil supply disruption frameworks retain their predictive validity under current energy market conditions. The research examines four major analytical frameworks widely used by policymakers and energy security analysts – asking whether these tools remain reliable in a world of renewable energy penetration, weakening OPEC coordination, and elevated geopolitical risk. The 2026 Strait of Hormuz crisis – the largest oil supply disruption in recorded history – served as the primary empirical test case.
The project was supervised by Prof. Dr. Andreas Löschel and Dr. Christian Rusche at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, with valuable methodological guidance from doctoral researcher Leon Lohbeck. The research attracted the attention of the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, where I was selected as one of three finalists for the OIES-Aramco Research Fellowship. Dr. Andreas Economou, Head of Oil Research, reviewed the proposal and encouraged continued development of the work.
The experience has deepened my understanding of energy security and oil market dynamics – and has opened exciting directions for further research.”
